CMIO Brett Oliver Questions the Need for Chief AI Officers

December 9, 2024

At the HLTH health innovation conference, experts in augmented intelligence questioned the need for appointing a chief AI officer in healthcare, advocating instead for broader AI literacy among staff. Brett Oliver, MD, CMIO at Baptist Health Medical Group, cautioned that over-reliance on a single officer could undermine collective responsibility for understanding AI technologies. Instead, the organization has established an AI oversight committee that fosters collaborative governance through its "AI Enablement Center." This initiative encourages input from various departments and focuses on aligning AI projects with the group's objectives, while also exploring ways to integrate AI in administrative tasks, such as using ambient AI scribes for documentation in clinical settings.

Florida Healthcare Provider Hit with $1.19M Penalty for Data Breach

December 9, 2024

A Florida pain management healthcare provider is facing a $1.19 million penalty from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services due to a data breach involving unauthorized access by an independent contractor. This breach, which affected the electronic protected health information of approximately 34,310 individuals and led to the creation of around 6,500 fraudulent Medicare claims, occurred between September 2018 and February 2019. Investigations revealed that the contractor retained access to the provider's systems for six months after their termination. The Office for Civil Rights found that the provider did not conduct adequate risk analysis and lacked policies for regular review of ePHI access, resulting in significant security failures.

Penn Medicine Partners with Cost Plus to Combat Drug Costs and Shortages

December 8, 2024

Penn Medicine has partnered with Mark Cuban's Cost Plus Drug Company to combat rising medication prices and ongoing drug shortages by purchasing the 100 most frequently dispensed medications from the Cost Plus Marketplace. This initiative, intended to provide more affordable access to essential drugs, comes as Penn Medicine operates 16 retail pharmacies that fill over 1.5 million prescriptions annually. The collaboration represents the third alliance formed with Cost Plus Drugs, joining ScionHealth and Community Health Systems. The Cost Plus Marketplace aims to enhance the availability of medications while CEO Kevin Mahoney noted that savings from eliminating generic medication mark-ups will be reinvested into innovative care solutions, though immediate cost reductions for patients may not be realized at the pharmacy level.
