About This Episode

What can I tell you about care venues. CIOs are being asked to stand up care in different places and in different ways then we have before. In partnership with Colleges, High Schools. In stand alone retail spaces, in partnership with dental and mental health. In the home. Care anywhere with telehealth, from anywhere. In the existing workflow or developing new workflows. Make it seemless to the clinician and seemless to the patient. Ready go.

Today I explore some of the ways I break this challenge down.

Speaker 00:01:07 And we have some great guests on the show and we're going Speaker 00:01:11 to do it a little different. Speaker 00:01:12 We're going to be narrowing the conversations down a little bit, Speaker 00:01:15 get a little deeper on a few topics. Speaker 00:01:17 Instead of going wide with all of our guests, then we will have two new channels Speaker 00:01:22 this week health academy, where we will have a new show called insights. Speaker 00:01:26 I've been told that listening to our content is one of the best ways Speaker 00:01:29 for someone to get up to speed. Speaker 00:01:30 On the topics that are relevant in health it, and toward that end, we packaged up Speaker 00:01:35 some of our best moments on insights and boiled them down to 10 minute episodes. Speaker 00:01:40 You can listen to them three times a week. Speaker 00:01:42 On that channel. Speaker 00:01:44 Finally, we will have this week health community. Speaker 00:02:03 And many more. Speaker 00:02:03 The show on that channel, this week health community, is called town hall. Speaker 00:02:08 It is where we will take turns with the microphone. Speaker 00:02:11 This should be a blast. Speaker 00:02:12 I'm really looking forward to it. Speaker 00:02:13 If you haven't signed up for all four channels, turn off your Speaker 00:02:16 podcast right now and subscribe. Speaker 00:02:19 That's right. Speaker 00:02:50 You can also go to this week health.com click on the shows or Speaker 00:02:53 the subscribe page, and the links will take you where you need to go. Speaker 00:02:58 All right. Speaker 00:02:58 Let's talk caravan news. Speaker 00:02:59 Before we do that, let me remind you what we are doing. Speaker 00:03:03 I hung out with a bunch of CEOs over the last couple of months, and one of Speaker 00:03:07 the questions I asked each of them was. Speaker 00:03:10 What is top of mind? Speaker 00:03:11 What's top of mind for you right now. Speaker 00:03:14 At the end of this year and going into 2022. Speaker 00:03:17 And from that input, I created a top five list of the things which Speaker 00:03:21 are top of mind for healthcare CEOs. Speaker 00:03:23 And they were in this order, number one, labor, and we covered this on Monday. Speaker 00:03:29 So five episodes we did Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Speaker 00:03:33 today is Friday with caravan news. Speaker 00:03:35 So Monday was labor. Speaker 00:03:37 And that was talking about the battle for staffing and it's Speaker 00:03:42 getting pretty intense out there. Speaker 00:03:44 There's a shortage. Speaker 00:03:46 Of really good. Speaker 00:03:47 It labor and there's also a shortage in clinical labor. Speaker 00:03:51 And that is creating a challenge. Speaker 00:03:53 So that's number one on their list. Speaker 00:03:54 Number two is cybersecurity for obvious reasons. Speaker 00:03:57 We covered that on Tuesday, Wednesday, all things digital, right? Speaker 00:04:01 So every CIO has a digital story or a digital project. Speaker 00:04:05 That they're looking at that is right around the corner. Speaker 00:04:08 Yesterday or Thursday, we looked at automation. Speaker 00:04:11 And I had fun with automation and did a bunch of research talked to some Speaker 00:04:15 people before I did that episode. Speaker 00:04:17 And so give you a little bit more content than I normally do. Speaker 00:04:21 Around that topic. Speaker 00:04:22 And then today is care venues. Speaker 00:04:23 What can I tell you about caravan news? Speaker 00:04:25 CEO's are being asked to stand up care in different places and in different Speaker 00:04:29 ways than we have ever been asked before in partnership with colleges and high Speaker 00:04:35 schools in standalone retail spaces. Speaker 00:04:37 In partnership with dental and mental health in the home, in the workplace Speaker 00:04:43 care anywhere with telehealth, from anywhere in the existing workflow Speaker 00:04:47 or developing new workflows, make it seamless for the clinician, Speaker 00:04:51 make it seamless for the patient. Speaker 00:04:53 Okay. Speaker 00:04:53 Ready? Speaker 00:04:55 Go. Speaker 00:04:56 You've probably already received some of these requests or at Speaker 00:04:58 least heard about some of them. Speaker 00:05:00 And let me tell you how I'm thinking about this. Speaker 00:05:04 This is a trend that goes back about a decade and the pandemic acted as a Speaker 00:05:09 catalyst to accelerate this activity. Speaker 00:05:11 Because it goes back a decade. Speaker 00:05:13 I know that this is a sustainable trend. Speaker 00:05:17 It's here to stay. Speaker 00:05:18 Because it is here to stay. Speaker 00:05:20 And I don't know where I'm going to be asked to stand up care. Speaker 00:05:23 Next. Speaker 00:05:24 I look to break these things down into core elements of delivery of care. Speaker 00:05:29 Or building blocks and fundamental platforms that can be mixed and Speaker 00:05:33 matched to develop new offerings in the community, regardless of where Speaker 00:05:37 I'm being asked to stand it up. Speaker 00:05:39 All right. Speaker 00:05:39 Let me give you a little more background. Speaker 00:05:41 What are we talking about when we're talking about Speaker 00:05:42 building blocks and platforms? Speaker 00:05:44 Let's talk about a building block, a building block might be something Speaker 00:05:47 like a digital front door, right? Speaker 00:05:50 It's going to have scheduling communication channel of some kind Speaker 00:05:52 easily accessible information to reduce the friction. Speaker 00:05:56 Of the patient interaction. Speaker 00:05:58 There should be a communication platform that acts outside of the Speaker 00:06:01 digital front door, but is integrated into the digital front door. Speaker 00:06:05 Why because you will, you use that comm platform in a bunch of Speaker 00:06:09 different applications, alerts, rescheduling, MedAdherence, Speaker 00:06:13 and patient to clinician communication to name a few. Speaker 00:06:16 If you don't do it as a platform, you will end up with 10 of these Speaker 00:06:19 things baked into various systems. Speaker 00:06:22 That is inflexible it's expensive to maintain and it's expensive to administer. Speaker 00:06:28 You will need medical devices of all kinds. Speaker 00:06:31 And these will vary based on care venue and specialty. Speaker 00:06:35 When this is the case, you're going to find that you want standard practices to Speaker 00:06:39 collect information from these devices. Speaker 00:06:41 There's going to be a whole bunch of them. Speaker 00:06:42 You can't really identify all of them upfront. Speaker 00:06:45 And so there's going to be new ones constantly coming on. Speaker 00:06:48 So you're going to want a way to collect information from these devices Speaker 00:06:51 and filter it to a system of record, which actually is a platform in itself. Speaker 00:06:56 If you think about it. Speaker 00:06:58 When collecting information from clinical devices, I look for tools that have a Speaker 00:07:02 track record of integrating with new devices quickly and completely think Speaker 00:07:06 things like capsule or I accurate. Speaker 00:07:09 . You'll want standard equipment for various builds the beds or exam room equipment Speaker 00:07:13 should be standardized and identified well before the request comes in. Speaker 00:07:17 Th think about it like Southwest airlines, right? Speaker 00:07:19 They keep costs down because they use seven 30 sevens. Speaker 00:07:23 Train your pilots on a 7 37 and they can fly almost any aircraft in the fleet. Speaker 00:07:28 NASA with other airlines training costs are higher. Speaker 00:07:31 The pilot flexibility is a lot less. Speaker 00:07:34 So. Speaker 00:07:35 Southwest ends up being one example of a company that lives by standards. Speaker 00:07:39 And because they do, they reduce their costs of maintenance, training and fuel. Speaker 00:07:44 Just to name a few. Speaker 00:07:45 Another example of what I'm talking about is Edward Jones. Speaker 00:07:48 And I'm fairly familiar with this because they were St. Speaker 00:07:51 Louis company. Speaker 00:07:52 And I did some work with them. Speaker 00:07:54 There's an Edward Jones office and every small town. Speaker 00:07:58 When everyone else in wealth management was moving away from offices. Speaker 00:08:02 Edward Jones put a strategy together to put up an office in 60 days Speaker 00:08:07 from inception to staff the office in 60 days, functioning making Speaker 00:08:12 phone calls, meeting with clients. Speaker 00:08:14 This catapulted them to the forefront of the industry. Speaker 00:08:17 Everyone else saw digital as an opportunity to reduce costs, Speaker 00:08:21 get rid of their real estate and tap into new markets. Speaker 00:08:24 All of that was true, but they left their core business wide open and Edward Jones. Speaker 00:08:29 Capitalized. Speaker 00:08:30 They had a warehouse full of pallets, organized by desk. Speaker 00:08:34 They would identify the number of people they were going to hire for an office Speaker 00:08:37 real estate would swoop in and sign a lease and the palace would go out. Speaker 00:08:42 Teens would be sent onsite and they became experts at standing up a new office. Speaker 00:08:47 And why not every pallet was the same. Speaker 00:08:49 Every printer, every router, every switch, every phone, the same Speaker 00:08:52 pre-configured and ready to go. Speaker 00:08:55 We have to get to that level of efficiency in standing up new care venues. Speaker 00:09:00 Perhaps there are multiple standards for the home for retail clinic and for. Speaker 00:09:05 I don't know, maybe a retail partner space of some kind. Speaker 00:09:08 Only, you know, your market and the different types of care venues. Speaker 00:09:11 But then look for the standards that you can establish. Speaker 00:09:14 Look for the commonality that you can establish and then put platforms in place. Speaker 00:09:18 That's going to be able to serve all of those care venues. Speaker 00:09:21 We should be able to roll these out as our system requires us to Speaker 00:09:24 with middle labor and training. Speaker 00:09:26 It's about identifying the building blocks and putting the platforms in place. Speaker 00:09:32 All right. Speaker 00:09:32 That's probably enough for care venues since this is the last show of the year. Speaker 00:09:36 I wanted to take a few minutes to say thank you for listening to this show. Speaker 00:09:40 I wasn't sure if it was going to be worth it for me to do this show, it's about Speaker 00:09:44 one hour to an hour and a half of my day. Speaker 00:09:47 Depending on the topic, but we built it and you started to show up. Speaker 00:09:52 We are moving towards about 150 downloads per episode, which is above the target. Speaker 00:09:56 We set when the year began, we did about 240 episodes, which Speaker 00:10:00 is also above the target we set before the year began as well. Speaker 00:10:04 And I'm just thankful. Speaker 00:10:05 I'm thankful that you showed up. Speaker 00:10:06 I'm thankful for the notes that I got. Speaker 00:10:08 I'm thankful for the people. Speaker 00:10:09 Especially who send me stories that is really helpful. Speaker 00:10:12 When you send me a story and say, Hey, can you talk about this? Speaker 00:10:15 Or this is really relevant for me. Speaker 00:10:16 I'd love to hear what you have to say about it. Speaker 00:10:18 That's a, that is one of the. Speaker 00:10:20 Most encouraging things for me when I get those notes. Speaker 00:10:23 I'm going to take a few weeks off and come back renewed for the new year. Speaker 00:10:27 I wanted to just end the show by saying thank you for a great 2021. Speaker 00:10:32 And I look forward to connecting with you again in 2022. Speaker 00:10:36 That's all for today. Speaker 00:10:37 If you know someone that might benefit from our channel, Speaker 00:10:40 please forward them a note. Speaker 00:10:41 They can subscribe on our website this week.
