Speaker 00:00:03 Today in health, it, we take a look at health conference Speaker 00:00:06 day two up here in Boston. Speaker 00:00:09 My name is bill Russell. Speaker 00:00:10 I'm a former CIO for a 16 hospital system and creator of this week in health. Speaker 00:00:14 It. Speaker 00:00:15 A child dedicated to keeping health it staff current and engaged. Speaker 00:00:19 I want to thank our sponsor for today's serious healthcare. Speaker 00:00:22 They've been a sponsor for almost two years now, they reached out and said, Speaker 00:00:26 Hey, we'd love what you're doing. Speaker 00:00:27 Really appreciate your mission to develop the next generation of health leaders. Speaker 00:00:31 And we want to be a part of it, and we have partnered with them Speaker 00:00:34 ever since and appreciate that. Speaker 00:00:37 And today we have a story about them. Speaker 00:00:38 Look forward to talking about that. Speaker 00:00:39 , If you believe in our mission as they did and want to partner with Speaker 00:00:43 us, go ahead and send a note to partner@thisweekathealthit.com. Speaker 00:00:48 Alright, day two of the health conference. Speaker 00:00:51 Let me give you a little of what happened today. Speaker 00:00:54 So I did a lot of interviews today, so my day was stilted. Speaker 00:00:58 I did go to a couple of the sessions, got to see the Walmart presentation, Speaker 00:01:02 general session, got to see the. Speaker 00:01:04 Cigna. Speaker 00:01:05 Presentation. Speaker 00:01:07 As well as the Mayo clinic presentation, but at the end of the day, I didn't Speaker 00:01:12 get to a lot of general sessions. Speaker 00:01:13 I did go to one breakout session. Speaker 00:01:15 And that was, Glen Tullman and Jonathan Bush. Speaker 00:01:18 And I won't go into that a little bit in, in a minute. Speaker 00:01:22 And I did some interviews. Speaker 00:01:24 So you will hear some of those later this week. Speaker 00:01:27 I did talk to Mike McNamara. Speaker 00:01:29 the president and CEO, Speaker 00:01:31 from impact health the company that did all the. Speaker 00:01:33 Screening for the conference. Speaker 00:01:36 They did all the testing. Speaker 00:01:37 And screening for the conference. Speaker 00:01:39 And I thought it was a fascinating interview just to understand how they ramp Speaker 00:01:42 those things up, who they're doing it for. Speaker 00:01:44 They do it for companies like MGM grand, opening up Las Vegas. Speaker 00:01:47 Again. Speaker 00:01:48 They do it for states. Speaker 00:01:49 They do it for large employers. Speaker 00:01:51 And obviously they do it for conferences as well. Speaker 00:01:54 And we had a really cool discussion, got some statistics from him on Speaker 00:01:58 how that process really went down. Speaker 00:02:02 They, process between four and 5,000 people. Speaker 00:02:05 Onsite doing the COVID testing. Speaker 00:02:08 And I thought the process was pretty good now. Speaker 00:02:11 Granted there could have been more people there, but Speaker 00:02:14 at the end of the day, it takes 20 minutes to process the test. Speaker 00:02:16 So there's 20 minutes built in there and there's going to be a line of some kind. Speaker 00:02:20 And, you just have to do that. Speaker 00:02:22 I was making note to someone who said they didn't like the line that. Speaker 00:02:25 My line took about 20 minutes, but the reality was if that line went Speaker 00:02:29 any faster, they didn't have enough seats for us all to social distance Speaker 00:02:33 and to sit appropriately apart. Speaker 00:02:35 So at the end of the day, the line couldn't really go any faster. Speaker 00:02:39 Anyway. Speaker 00:02:39 And the line was actually interesting. Speaker 00:02:41 Cause you met some people that you hadn't seen in a while. Speaker 00:02:44 You had a great conversation and the 20 minutes. Speaker 00:02:46 Seeing like three minutes. Speaker 00:02:48 So I really enjoyed the process. Speaker 00:02:50 Enjoy the conversation with Mike McNamara. Speaker 00:02:52 Look forward to sharing that. Speaker 00:02:54 With you. Speaker 00:02:54 I talked to Derek Baird used to be with Avia and I had known Derek Speaker 00:02:59 for a while and really appreciated the work that he did at Avia. Speaker 00:03:02 He left there. Speaker 00:03:03 And went to be the president of the north America operation. Speaker 00:03:08 For sense, sign health. Speaker 00:03:10 Another interview I did this morning. Speaker 00:03:11 Interesting company in the data space. Speaker 00:03:13 It's a pretty busy space right now. Speaker 00:03:15 Very hot space. Speaker 00:03:16 And we talk a little bit about that, about the competition in that space, Speaker 00:03:20 and also making the transition from Europe to the U S so the set Speaker 00:03:26 sign has a very large presence Speaker 00:03:28 in the UK. Speaker 00:03:29 Working with NIH and they are bringing those same capabilities over to the U Speaker 00:03:34 S and we talk a little bit about that. Speaker 00:03:36 So that's going to be. Speaker 00:03:37 A good conversation as well. Speaker 00:03:38 And then I did spend some time with Glen. Speaker 00:03:40 Tullman talking about the Walmart announcement and it's Speaker 00:03:44 an exciting announcement. Speaker 00:03:45 And I think a precursor to a lot of other announcements that are Speaker 00:03:49 going to be coming down the pike. Speaker 00:03:50 You're going to hear that. Speaker 00:03:52 Interview on Monday, I believe. Speaker 00:03:54 I think I'm going to air that instead of a news day show. Speaker 00:03:56 Because I'm not really gonna have time this week to record a new state show. Speaker 00:04:00 So we will. Speaker 00:04:01 Air that in its entirety. Speaker 00:04:02 With regard to some of the other events. Speaker 00:04:06 Of the day. Speaker 00:04:06 So I thought one of the more interesting ones was Dr. Speaker 00:04:10 Cheryl Pegas. Speaker 00:04:11 She is with Walmart health. Speaker 00:04:14 And I love how she frames things up a great communicator. Speaker 00:04:18 One of the things you started off with was that. Speaker 00:04:20 Walmart has been in healthcare since 1978. Speaker 00:04:23 I think it's one of those things that just escapes us. Speaker 00:04:25 We just don't even think about. Speaker 00:04:26 But it's not oh my gosh, Walmart getting into healthcare. Speaker 00:04:29 Walmart has been into healthcare. Speaker 00:04:31 And this is why the business insider story. Speaker 00:04:33 I just made me giggle when I saw that Walmart was getting out of Speaker 00:04:37 healthcare and I thought that there's no way Walmart is getting out of Speaker 00:04:40 healthcare and sure enough, it's not. Speaker 00:04:43 And let me give you their perspective on this, because I Speaker 00:04:45 think it's really interesting. Speaker 00:04:47 She talks about. Speaker 00:04:48 Affordable, accessible and human centered care. Speaker 00:04:51 And one of the things that they focus in on is the fact that Speaker 00:04:55 we're on 40% of health is based on social determinants. Speaker 00:04:59 About 30% is based on personal behaviors, right? Speaker 00:05:03 Our decisions that we make, and then 20% is actually clinical care. Speaker 00:05:08 Which is interesting because, sometimes we forget that sometimes we put a Speaker 00:05:12 lot of emphasis on political care. Speaker 00:05:14 And forget that an awful lot of what goes on that impacts people's Speaker 00:05:18 health is outside of critical care. Speaker 00:05:21 And I'm going to paraphrase here so Speaker 00:05:22 she was conveying her view of healthcare. Speaker 00:05:24 And she said, my job is to make sure that people feel that accessing healthcare Speaker 00:05:28 is as easy as planning their vacation. Speaker 00:05:31 The focus is on access. Speaker 00:05:33 We have to not stay in our private offices from nine to five, Monday Speaker 00:05:37 through Friday, but we have to provide care the way people live. Speaker 00:05:41 And sometimes people think about healthcare on Saturday afternoon. Speaker 00:05:45 Go figure. Speaker 00:05:46 And that's where Walmart comes in while we're, it has a couple of things going Speaker 00:05:49 for them that are pretty interesting. Speaker 00:05:53 One to me, is that. Speaker 00:05:55 They're everywhere, right? Speaker 00:05:56 Their stores are literally everywhere and she cites that 4,000 Speaker 00:06:01 of their stores are actually in medically underserved communities. Speaker 00:06:06 And she said our people live in these communities. Speaker 00:06:09 And part of what they do as an organization is they listen to Speaker 00:06:12 their employees and what their employees are telling them. Speaker 00:06:15 And one of the things she noted that I found interesting as well, was that one Speaker 00:06:20 of the benefits that they have is people feel healthcare is accessible when they're Speaker 00:06:24 talking to people that they recognize people from their community, people that Speaker 00:06:29 are from the same demographic as them. Speaker 00:06:31 And so they employ people in that community. Speaker 00:06:34 They employ people to deliver care in that community. Speaker 00:06:37 And when they come in, they're actually talking to their neighbors. Speaker 00:06:41 And so that is one of the, I think interesting aspects of Wal-Mart's. Speaker 00:06:47 Plan. Speaker 00:06:48 The other aspect obviously is where else can you do so much Speaker 00:06:51 around your health in one visit? Speaker 00:06:54 And she drove that point home a couple times. Speaker 00:06:56 I don't know if I have a specific quote in here, but it's, it is one Speaker 00:07:00 of those places where you can go. Speaker 00:07:02 And you can see a clinician. Speaker 00:07:04 You can actually see a dentist. Speaker 00:07:06 You can go to a pharmacy, you can get food that you need. Speaker 00:07:09 You can get a durable goods and items that you need for health. Speaker 00:07:14 There's just so much you can do in a single visit. Speaker 00:07:17 And that is impressive. Speaker 00:07:20 Again, I thought it was a really great presentation of Speaker 00:07:23 why Walmart is in healthcare. Speaker 00:07:25 And why Walmart is a player in healthcare. Speaker 00:07:27 Now, do I expect Walmart to be standing up hospitals know? Speaker 00:07:30 And she talks about that. Speaker 00:07:31 We partner, we want to partner. Speaker 00:07:33 We want to partner with long-term care facilities. Speaker 00:07:35 We want to partner with people delivering care in the home. Speaker 00:07:37 We want to partner with the local care communities, and it's one of the Speaker 00:07:41 reasons that they selected epic as their EMR so that they can integrate Speaker 00:07:45 into the larger healthcare ecosystem. Speaker 00:07:48 Again, great conversation. Speaker 00:07:49 Really interesting. Speaker 00:07:50 I could talk about the Jonathan Bush and Glen Tullman presentation. Speaker 00:07:54 It was brilliant. Speaker 00:07:55 It was funny. Speaker 00:07:56 It was engaging. Speaker 00:07:58 It was interesting to think about what they're doing today in healthcare, Speaker 00:08:02 what they have done in healthcare and what is possible in healthcare. Speaker 00:08:05 These are two great storytellers and they did a phenomenal job in that presentation. Speaker 00:08:10 I might go back to that another time. Speaker 00:08:12 But in the interest of time, I do want to cover the fact that Sirius computer Speaker 00:08:16 solutions, which serious health care is a part of an announcement was Speaker 00:08:20 made today with the intent of CDW to purchase serious health care, which Speaker 00:08:25 I think is a pretty big announcement. Speaker 00:08:27 It'll be interesting to see how that plays out. Speaker 00:08:28 I think this is just the nature of the fact that there's just a lot Speaker 00:08:31 of money out there in the space. Speaker 00:08:34 And I think we're seeing some of that money get put to use. Speaker 00:08:37 In the form of consolidating assets in the industry. Speaker 00:08:41 Sirius healthcare has a great reputation in the industry. Speaker 00:08:44 And I'm not just saying that because they're a sponsor of the show. Speaker 00:08:47 They have great talent within their organization. Speaker 00:08:49 They hire great people and they have done great work within the industry. Speaker 00:08:53 I know a lot of people have relied on them pretty heavily. Speaker 00:08:56 For things like cybersecurity things like moving to the cloud, things like EMR. Speaker 00:09:01 Hosting and disaster recovery planning amongst a million Speaker 00:09:05 other services that they offer. Speaker 00:09:07 So we're going to keep an eye on that one. Speaker 00:09:08 We're excited about the potential and the possibilities there, and just Speaker 00:09:12 wanted to make you aware of that. Speaker 00:09:14 So that's all for today. Speaker 00:09:15 Check back off and we're going to continue to post. Speaker 00:09:19 Information on the health conference, different interviews, and maybe Speaker 00:09:22 one more of these diaries. Speaker 00:09:25 We have a whole day tomorrow, I'm going to be doing a bunch of Speaker 00:09:28 interviews and more conversations. Speaker 00:09:30 So I'll continue to share those. Speaker 00:09:32 Into next week, leading up to the chime conference where we are going to do not Speaker 00:09:38 a live Newsday episode with Drexel nigh, Speaker 00:09:41 but an onsite recorded episode of Newsday. Speaker 00:09:45 And I hope to have some of our friends from the industry stop Speaker 00:09:50 by and join the conversation. Speaker 00:09:52 I think that will be a blast. Speaker 00:09:54 That's all for today. Speaker 00:09:55 Do you know, someone that might benefit from our channel, Speaker 00:09:57 please forward them a note.
