Bill Russell 00:00:03 Today in health, it interviews from the chime Bill Russell 00:00:05 conference in San Diego. Bill Russell 00:00:07 My name is bill Russell. Bill Russell 00:00:08 I'm a former CIO for a 16 hospital system and creator of this week in health. Bill Russell 00:00:11 It a channel dedicated to keeping health it staff current and engaged. Bill Russell 00:00:16 Just a quick reminder. Bill Russell 00:00:17 I wouldn't be dropping interviews over the next couple of days and into Bill Russell 00:00:20 next week from the chime conference. Bill Russell 00:00:23 And then I'm going to have some more interviews from the next conference I Bill Russell 00:00:27 want to be going to, and then eventually I'll get back to Florida and to the studio Bill Russell 00:00:32 where we'll start looking at the news. Bill Russell 00:00:33 Once again. Bill Russell 00:00:34 Hope you enjoy this interview. Bill Russell 00:00:37 All right. Bill Russell 00:00:37 Another interview from the chime floor. Bill Russell 00:00:39 And we are here with a member of the class from welcome back Kotter. Bill Russell 00:00:43 We're here with Corinne Edwards. Bill Russell 00:00:45 That was a great picture of you up there. Bill Russell 00:00:46 You did. Bill Russell 00:00:47 I'm sorry. Bill Russell 00:00:47 I didn't finish with the Korean Edwards, Quill health CEO, but the the opening Bill Russell 00:00:52 for chime, you were up on stage. Bill Russell 00:00:54 You're a chime board member. Carina Edwards 00:00:55 I am a time board better. Carina Edwards 00:00:56 We did this whole skit for welcome back hotter. Carina Edwards 00:00:59 Yep. Carina Edwards 00:01:00 The new Yorker in me had to come out and they showed my Carina Edwards 00:01:02 really big hair in high school. Carina Edwards 00:01:03 It was, are Bill Russell 00:01:04 you originally from New York that explains to the New York giants? Bill Russell 00:01:08 Totally. Bill Russell 00:01:08 Yes. Bill Russell 00:01:09 But you lived in Boston. Carina Edwards 00:01:10 I did. Carina Edwards 00:01:11 So I was born in Yonkers. Carina Edwards 00:01:12 I grew up in New York and I went to school in DC and then my first gig was in Boston. Carina Edwards 00:01:16 So it just became this thing where I always held on to the giants, Bill Russell 00:01:20 the giants, but not giant. Bill Russell 00:01:23 I was Carina Edwards 00:01:23 never that big into baseball. Carina Edwards 00:01:24 And so now, because of my basketball, legions was also not strong. Carina Edwards 00:01:27 So I'm a Sixers fan and I'm a giants fan. Carina Edwards 00:01:31 That's my two sports, but I thought Bill Russell 00:01:33 you followed. Bill Russell 00:01:34 Yeah, don't worry. Bill Russell 00:01:35 You're Phillies. Bill Russell 00:01:36 You're not missing much. Bill Russell 00:01:37 I'm sorry. Bill Russell 00:01:37 I'm sure somebody from Philadelphia is watching. Bill Russell 00:01:39 I'm originally from Pennsylvania. Bill Russell 00:01:41 And so I grew up a Phillies fan, an Eagles fan, Penn state fan, all those things. Bill Russell 00:01:47 But what I found is when you move around the country yeah. Bill Russell 00:01:49 It's. Bill Russell 00:01:51 It's kinda neat to root for the team where you live. Bill Russell 00:01:54 I'm always going to be a St. Bill Russell 00:01:55 Louis Cardinals fan. Bill Russell 00:01:56 I lived there for 20 years, but when you move to a city, it's, there's Bill Russell 00:01:59 something about connecting with it and being there and it's great for Carina Edwards 00:02:01 me coming to Philly. Carina Edwards 00:02:03 Cause I think Philly is very similar to a New York city. Carina Edwards 00:02:05 So it's just a, it's a fun, it's a gritty city, but it's close to New York so I can Carina Edwards 00:02:10 get to the Meadowlands really quickly. Carina Edwards 00:02:11 So for me, I'm still rooting for a local team, but I can't Carina Edwards 00:02:14 wear any blue on the streets. Carina Edwards 00:02:15 And Bill Russell 00:02:15 the good news Saquon Barkley went to Penn state. Bill Russell 00:02:18 So Carina Edwards 00:02:19 a little tiny in there. Bill Russell 00:02:21 I know we're going to talk well, hell don't worry because it is. Bill Russell 00:02:24 I want to hear your journey. Bill Russell 00:02:25 It's been awhile since I, since we visited, but. Bill Russell 00:02:29 New York giants. Bill Russell 00:02:29 They've got problems. Bill Russell 00:02:30 They do. Carina Edwards 00:02:31 So a Cowboys game, I have to give them credit. Carina Edwards 00:02:33 So 70% of the offensive line was in the locker room. Carina Edwards 00:02:35 Injured. Carina Edwards 00:02:36 Danny Jones got that bad whack, but I give them credit because they had grit Carina Edwards 00:02:39 to come back and score a touchdown. Carina Edwards 00:02:42 And just I know they didn't win the game, but they showed grit. Carina Edwards 00:02:45 And last week, the Panthers, that was fun. Bill Russell 00:02:48 You really are a diehard fan. Bill Russell 00:02:49 We're going to do it. Bill Russell 00:02:50 We're going to come back someday. Bill Russell 00:02:52 Maybe someday. Bill Russell 00:02:53 Maybe spring bill Parcells back, is that the last time you had. Bill Russell 00:02:56 Come on Carina Edwards 00:02:56 now, we took two rings away from Brady. Bill Russell 00:02:59 That's true. Bill Russell 00:03:00 You had the Eli years and the catch over the head and that kind of stuff. Bill Russell 00:03:04 You really are a fan. Bill Russell 00:03:05 If you like to. Bill Russell 00:03:05 You'd like, no, all this stuff ever since I was a kid. Bill Russell 00:03:08 Wow, fantastic. Bill Russell 00:03:09 Quill health. Bill Russell 00:03:10 Yes. Bill Russell 00:03:10 You guys are, when we first met, I was in Philadelphia and we actually Bill Russell 00:03:16 did it on location in Philly. Bill Russell 00:03:18 That was fun. Bill Russell 00:03:19 And got to see your location. Bill Russell 00:03:20 You guys were early on. Bill Russell 00:03:22 Maybe at signed pen. Carina Edwards 00:03:24 Yeah. Carina Edwards 00:03:24 So we started, I joined in April, 2019 and we basically Carina Edwards 00:03:28 signed a pen two months later. Carina Edwards 00:03:31 And so you and I think I connected right in between that. Carina Edwards 00:03:34 Yeah. Bill Russell 00:03:35 Just gotten started. Bill Russell 00:03:36 All right. Bill Russell 00:03:37 So you just got started. Bill Russell 00:03:37 That was a couple of years ago. Bill Russell 00:03:39 It was there's this thing called COVID in the middle. Bill Russell 00:03:40 This thing called COVID in the middle, that slowed things down Bill Russell 00:03:42 a little bit or accelerated Carina Edwards 00:03:44 it accelerated some things for us. Carina Edwards 00:03:46 So what happened was we had pen signed. Carina Edwards 00:03:48 We also signed off. Carina Edwards 00:03:50 And so we had Philly covered and we were looking to take our time to make sure that Carina Edwards 00:03:54 the platform we had built was really going to produce the outcomes that we needed. Carina Edwards 00:03:58 And we had time to tune it before we started scaling. Carina Edwards 00:04:01 So that's been, that was the fun journey, but what happened in March, Carina Edwards 00:04:05 2020, all of our patients went offline. Carina Edwards 00:04:08 And so we had to say wait a second, we have this amazingly scalable platform. Carina Edwards 00:04:13 It can do any journey. Carina Edwards 00:04:15 So what's going on with. Carina Edwards 00:04:16 And so we worked with Comcast and independence across our parent companies. Carina Edwards 00:04:20 And there were so much misinformation going on. Carina Edwards 00:04:22 We partnered with NBC news and the today show, we curated a COVID prepared Carina Edwards 00:04:26 this toolkit and taught people how to work from home and had a homeschool. Carina Edwards 00:04:29 Your kids had a caregiver remotely. Carina Edwards 00:04:31 And so we spun that up in five days. Carina Edwards 00:04:33 It was one of those moments where you're like, I hope it works and hope it works. Carina Edwards 00:04:37 And so we brought in the Comcast scaling engineers, we've got our backend scaled Carina Edwards 00:04:40 up and we launched a 1.3 million. Carina Edwards 00:04:43 That following Bill Russell 00:04:43 Monday. Bill Russell 00:04:44 So you're ready to scale now, is this like stuff that's just going to go on the shelf Bill Russell 00:04:48 or is this stuff that like proved out the Carina Edwards 00:04:50 platform at the platform? Carina Edwards 00:04:52 So it really, when it proved scale, we could do it. Carina Edwards 00:04:54 And then two, it proved the flexibility of how we bring together Carina Edwards 00:04:58 videos, articles, links, texts, emails, to engage populations Carina Edwards 00:05:02 and bring them back to an expo. Bill Russell 00:05:04 So if I'm an ex affinity customer and I happen to be an Bill Russell 00:05:07 video customer, even though I'm in Florida, I think they're everywhere. Bill Russell 00:05:09 Yeah. Bill Russell 00:05:11 I can essentially talk to my set-top box and say what and access Carina Edwards 00:05:16 Wilhelm. Carina Edwards 00:05:16 Yeah. Carina Edwards 00:05:16 So Quill is available on your mobile device or your or the web, Carina Edwards 00:05:20 but you can also go to the Comcast box, they Quill, or you can say Carina Edwards 00:05:23 what happens next into your voice. Carina Edwards 00:05:25 Remote. Carina Edwards 00:05:26 The quilt app comes up just like you pair your Netflix account or your Hulu account. Carina Edwards 00:05:30 You compare your quilt account. Carina Edwards 00:05:31 So on the landing page right now is a ton of great information about the Carina Edwards 00:05:34 vaccine and why to get the vaccine and everybody should get vaccinated. Carina Edwards 00:05:37 And then. Carina Edwards 00:05:38 It's the, if you pair your journey whether you're one of our 10 customers, Carina Edwards 00:05:42 you get 10 now, which is great of your, one of our 10 customers. Carina Edwards 00:05:45 You can basically see your journey on the screens. Carina Edwards 00:05:48 So we're doing a lot with the television when it comes to oncology, new diagnosis, Carina Edwards 00:05:53 really sitting down with your family and understanding what it's going to Carina Edwards 00:05:56 mean to go through head and neck cancer. Carina Edwards 00:05:57 Another one that we're doing is a lot of PT, a lot of self-directed exercises. Carina Edwards 00:06:01 You already have the screen hanging on your wall. Carina Edwards 00:06:03 Why try to stand up? Bill Russell 00:06:05 So this is you go in and talk to, if I were at a health system, you Bill Russell 00:06:08 come in and talk to, I assume the CA CMO medical officer and others, and you would Bill Russell 00:06:13 say, here's what our platform can do. Bill Russell 00:06:15 And then they sit back and go, where we could use that. Bill Russell 00:06:18 We use that here and here. Bill Russell 00:06:19 And so that's, what's driving your content, Carina Edwards 00:06:20 IRIS. Carina Edwards 00:06:21 It is. Carina Edwards 00:06:22 So we actually, we had a couple of core thesis on where to start. Carina Edwards 00:06:25 So the first was where anybody's entering into value based Carina Edwards 00:06:28 contracts are capitated models. Carina Edwards 00:06:29 And so Medicare is your. Carina Edwards 00:06:30 Where are those where those things are capitated and you have to control the 30, Carina Edwards 00:06:33 60, 90 days post experience and getting patients prepared for the better outcome Carina Edwards 00:06:38 is how we start them pre procedure. Carina Edwards 00:06:40 And then we follow them through, post-procedure getting insights Carina Edwards 00:06:43 from them along the way. Carina Edwards 00:06:44 Interesting. Carina Edwards 00:06:45 And then we pivoted to chronics cause that's for the ACS of the world. Carina Edwards 00:06:48 That's a big one. Carina Edwards 00:06:49 So COPD, diabetes, lupus. Carina Edwards 00:06:52 How do we make sure that we can enable the PCPs? Carina Edwards 00:06:54 And now we're also doing, fee for service. Carina Edwards 00:06:57 Thriving. Carina Edwards 00:06:58 And so for differentiating service lines, like musculoskeletal cardiology the areas Carina Edwards 00:07:03 of bariatric surgery, the areas that are growing revenue for health system. Carina Edwards 00:07:07 So we're differentiating to prove, can we reduce risk? Carina Edwards 00:07:12 Can we improve patient compliance? Carina Edwards 00:07:14 And can we actually deliver a consumer grade experience? Carina Edwards 00:07:16 That's Bill Russell 00:07:16 fun. Bill Russell 00:07:17 I like about this. Bill Russell 00:07:18 The, I talked to Glen Tullman last week at the health conference. Bill Russell 00:07:23 The thing that Glen is a master at is he knows healthcare. Bill Russell 00:07:27 So he's able to say, okay, here's the soft spot that we're going to go in here. Bill Russell 00:07:31 We're going to solve this. Bill Russell 00:07:32 Here's another one. Bill Russell 00:07:33 And when I hear you talk like somebody who knows healthcare. Bill Russell 00:07:36 And when I walked around the health conference and I talked to some of Bill Russell 00:07:38 the startups, they're like, we think this, and we think that, and I'm gone. Bill Russell 00:07:44 You might want to prove out your thesis before you take Bill Russell 00:07:46 that $5 million or 10 or 250 Carina Edwards 00:07:49 million that the money is raining in. Carina Edwards 00:07:52 I've been in this industry for 25 years. Carina Edwards 00:07:54 The exciting part for me is we've proven outcomes with rigor. Carina Edwards 00:07:58 And so we've reduced readmissions. Carina Edwards 00:08:00 We reduce like the savings, improved discharge to home. Carina Edwards 00:08:02 We've reduced ed visits. Carina Edwards 00:08:03 So I know on the outcome side, the platform works and the way we Carina Edwards 00:08:07 get patients through an episode of care is very differentiated. Bill Russell 00:08:10 Will you do studies like public? Bill Russell 00:08:12 You Carina Edwards 00:08:13 are going to do a few of them right now. Bill Russell 00:08:15 That's that's good stuff. Bill Russell 00:08:16 And the other thing is, when you're at one client, I'm interviewing you Bill Russell 00:08:19 saying, Hey, I really like you tell me about what is it like being at a Bill Russell 00:08:22 startup, but when you're at 10 clients, that's that's validation in healthcare. Bill Russell 00:08:26 That Carina Edwards 00:08:26 means, it's exciting. Carina Edwards 00:08:27 And it's also we're we're partnered up in. Carina Edwards 00:08:30 So I have a partner Pete care, who is the best in class Carina Edwards 00:08:34 interactive in-patient system. Carina Edwards 00:08:36 And so when you're hanging TVs on the wall and you're having your patients connect to Carina Edwards 00:08:39 their television, we can do the prey, they do the bed, we do the discharge home and Carina Edwards 00:08:44 it's this lovely care continuum solution. Carina Edwards 00:08:46 And they've been great because they've been answering a lot of infrastructure Carina Edwards 00:08:49 RFPs for wonderful new towers going up. Carina Edwards 00:08:51 And so it's been a great route to market for us to provide you. Carina Edwards 00:08:54 Sure. Bill Russell 00:08:55 Talk to me about the road to CEO because when you write. Bill Russell 00:08:58 We met when you were at Impravada you, weren't not a CEO, but you Bill Russell 00:09:01 were, you're doing a lot of stuff. Bill Russell 00:09:03 The interesting with what I see from the outside, because Bill Russell 00:09:06 I see you on social media. Bill Russell 00:09:07 I see. Bill Russell 00:09:07 Oh, Korean Edwards is going to be here with Dr. Bill Russell 00:09:09 Klasko and she'd be here with, and I'm like, how does she get the product done? Bill Russell 00:09:14 How does she get the board meetings? Bill Russell 00:09:16 How does she get sales? Bill Russell 00:09:17 This, the role of the CEO is a lot of, it's a pretty interesting dance, isn't it? Carina Edwards 00:09:20 I think the first thing is you have to surround yourself with great. Carina Edwards 00:09:23 And I've had the great fortune of having a few folks follow me that we have Carina Edwards 00:09:27 a shorthand or any, which is lovely. Carina Edwards 00:09:28 And they have an amazing team. Carina Edwards 00:09:30 My CFO, my chief people officer, my chief of staff, they are Carina Edwards 00:09:33 they are aligned to the mission. Carina Edwards 00:09:35 They help us drive to the Bill Russell 00:09:36 outcome. Bill Russell 00:09:37 So you're not looking at code every day. Carina Edwards 00:09:40 I just brought in Dwight rom to look at code every day. Bill Russell 00:09:45 But what I mean? Bill Russell 00:09:45 So there's an operation component. Bill Russell 00:09:47 There's a marketing, there's a sales component. Bill Russell 00:09:50 You're the F you end up being the face of the organization or is it Al Roker? Bill Russell 00:09:55 W Carina Edwards 00:09:55 it's really important. Carina Edwards 00:09:56 So I've always been, so my role at Impravada was I ran all of our Carina Edwards 00:10:00 customers and our post-sale experience. Carina Edwards 00:10:02 So running and being integrated in where the clinicians work and Carina Edwards 00:10:06 understanding the workflow and seeing the outcomes that's business outcomes. Carina Edwards 00:10:11 And so being the front end of this, to know the specifics of the journeys, Carina Edwards 00:10:14 to understand how our customers are using it, like when you and I met back Carina Edwards 00:10:17 in the day, or you were a CIO at St. Carina Edwards 00:10:20 Joe's and you were a customer and getting in there to understand Carina Edwards 00:10:23 your business challenges makes us. Carina Edwards 00:10:26 So when Bill Russell 00:10:26 you're sitting across from a CEO, you're saying, look, these are Bill Russell 00:10:29 the results we're getting here, and here. Bill Russell 00:10:30 And you already know their challenges you already, before you Bill Russell 00:10:33 go in and sit down with that CEO. Bill Russell 00:10:35 How much of their population is at risk. Bill Russell 00:10:37 How much of their population is Medicare, Medicaid, all that stuff. Bill Russell 00:10:40 That's public. Bill Russell 00:10:40 And so you're ready to talk about what you've done Carina Edwards 00:10:43 and also where they need help. Carina Edwards 00:10:45 Because I think everybody across the provider side is at a Carina Edwards 00:10:48 different stage of this journey. Carina Edwards 00:10:49 And so when I think the most, the worst term we're seeing everywhere Carina Edwards 00:10:55 is the digital front door. Carina Edwards 00:10:57 And we assume there's one. Bill Russell 00:10:59 All right. Bill Russell 00:10:59 We're going to have to edit like five of my episodes. Bill Russell 00:11:01 Now Carina Edwards 00:11:01 go ahead. Carina Edwards 00:11:02 Because I think it goes back to, there's probably not one digital front Carina Edwards 00:11:04 door, there's different experiences. Carina Edwards 00:11:06 You have to spin up for different patients on different parts of Carina Edwards 00:11:08 their journey and the pane of glass that they use should be irrelevant. Carina Edwards 00:11:12 It's what's more convenient for them and the consumer, and more importantly, Carina Edwards 00:11:15 what's more convenient to their caregiver. Bill Russell 00:11:18 That's it? Bill Russell 00:11:19 Yeah. Bill Russell 00:11:20 It's interesting. Bill Russell 00:11:21 This is really being driven by the consumers. Bill Russell 00:11:23 Expectations have really changed during COVID. Bill Russell 00:11:25 Are we tracking that. Bill Russell 00:11:27 Because a lot of times we get anecdotal in healthcare. Bill Russell 00:11:30 We go everybody wants a digital front door. Bill Russell 00:11:32 And the reality is when we look at the data, we go, you know what? Bill Russell 00:11:35 They respond to tax a lot better than the newer digital front door, maybe. Bill Russell 00:11:39 But we don't tend to look at that data. Bill Russell 00:11:41 We just assume, oh, digital transformation means a really cool Bill Russell 00:11:45 app or a really cool something. Bill Russell 00:11:47 Are we tracking that? Bill Russell 00:11:47 How we're interacting with. Bill Russell 00:11:48 We Carina Edwards 00:11:49 are, and I think it goes back to, everyone's Carina Edwards 00:11:51 got different digital personas. Carina Edwards 00:11:52 And when you're on different parts of the journey, getting a hip replacement Carina Edwards 00:11:56 is completely different than going through head and neck cancer. Carina Edwards 00:11:59 Or if you're going through head and neck cancer, you have to have surgery. Carina Edwards 00:12:02 There is something where you have your family's impacted, you are impacted. Carina Edwards 00:12:05 Your life expectancy is impacted. Carina Edwards 00:12:07 So getting prepared for that mentally and having a good outcome is tied Carina Edwards 00:12:11 to preparedness hip replacement. Carina Edwards 00:12:14 Do you know, the fundamentals, do you need to show up prepared and then Carina Edwards 00:12:16 recovering from that it's getting moving and making sure patients are moving. Carina Edwards 00:12:20 So sometimes getting moving means a TV and exercises, getting Carina Edwards 00:12:25 ready for head neck cancer. Carina Edwards 00:12:26 That means a lot of other offline conversations. Carina Edwards 00:12:30 Just understanding the information when you're ready to hear it Carina Edwards 00:12:33 on whatever pane of glass you Bill Russell 00:12:34 want. Bill Russell 00:12:35 What about, so w we have a lot of conversations about health Bill Russell 00:12:38 equity and those kinds of things. Bill Russell 00:12:40 Communities. Bill Russell 00:12:40 Philadelphia is one of those. Bill Russell 00:12:41 Cause the interview I did with Dr. Bill Russell 00:12:43 Klasko taught he very much. Bill Russell 00:12:45 Hey, that's zip code? Bill Russell 00:12:46 It's going to die five years quicker than that zip code. Bill Russell 00:12:50 And he wasn't talking like a hundred miles away. Bill Russell 00:12:52 He was talking like, yeah. Bill Russell 00:12:54 Yeah. Bill Russell 00:12:54 In Philadelphia it was pretty stark. Bill Russell 00:12:56 Does the set top box. Bill Russell 00:12:58 That's a phone. Bill Russell 00:12:59 You have a lot of different ways Carina Edwards 00:13:00 to tone the texts and the emails really resonates. Carina Edwards 00:13:04 So we have, one of our customers is AmeriHealth Caritas, and Carina Edwards 00:13:06 they're a Medicaid provider and we serve 187,000 Medicaid lives Carina Edwards 00:13:11 in Philadelphia, five county. Carina Edwards 00:13:13 And really for them, we're really driving up health literacy for Carina Edwards 00:13:17 caregiving, just on the notion of if you're caring for someone in the Carina Edwards 00:13:21 Medicaid program and you they qualify for being a longterm shared services. Carina Edwards 00:13:25 And what are the benefits? Carina Edwards 00:13:26 How do I navigate Medicaid? Carina Edwards 00:13:28 How do I make sure that the person I'm caring for it gets the right care Carina Edwards 00:13:31 at the right venue at the right time? Carina Edwards 00:13:33 So it's been really interesting understanding their text, email Carina Edwards 00:13:37 adoption versus long form video content. Carina Edwards 00:13:40 And then also with that population, we promote the Comcast internet essentials Carina Edwards 00:13:45 program where any household that qualifies for Medicaid can get $10 a Carina Edwards 00:13:49 month internet and a hundred dollars PC.
