The Transcarent platform integrates directly through the care pathway of each health system, including scheduling and pre- and post-care, support services and same-day payment for providers.
WHY IT MATTERS
Transcarent says the ecosystem will provide the employees of national self-insured employers with faster access to verified high-quality digital or in-person care, higher-quality care and affordable and predictable costs with full transparency.
"Our close collaboration with these 10 leading health systems will allow us to better design care pathways, provide higher-quality care and faster access," Glen Tullman, CEO of Transcarent, said in a statement.
The former founder and executive chairman of Livongo Health and CEO of Allscripts, now Veradigm , said that digital experiences must be combined with hands-on care.
"It’s not an either/or, it’s both."
According to the company's announcement Tuesday, the partnerships enable more coordinated and personalized patient experiences and simplifies healthcare for employers, providers and patients.
"To be clear, we’re not talking about the lowest costs, we’re talking about the highest quality of care enabled by better processes," added Dr. Randy Hawkins, Transcarent's chief medical officer.
Hawkins called the benefits of cost-effective coordination and value-based care incentives the platform aims to provide a "win-win" for employers and health systems.
"High-quality care drives down the overall cost of care. Through early intervention, process design and second opinions, we identify what care is necessary and then ensure it is performed by quality organizations at the appropriate site of care."
Transcarent's first 10 health system partners are:
Advocate Health
Atrium Health
Baylor Scott & White Health
Corewell Health
Hackensack Meridian Health
Intermountain Healthcare
Mass General Brigham
Memorial Hermann Health System
Mount Sinai Health System
Virginia Mason Franciscan Health
THE LARGER TREND
Transcarent emerged in 2021, announced investments of $200 million for its healthcare IT technology in 2022 and earlier this year, partnered with ViewFi , cofounded by U.S. tennis champion Andy Roddick, on virtual orthopedic rehabilitation and musculoskeletal care.
Transcarent's Orthopedic Consult Solution provides virtual diagnostic exams by orthopedic physicians and surgeons in less than two days via the Transcarent app.
The company has expended its services, including oncology services, behavioral healthcare navigation and pharmacy benefit tools.
Before a HIMSS23 conversation with Hal Wolf, CEO of HIMSS, Tullman said virtual care and artificial intelligence are the opportunities that will help move healthcare into an era of consumerization .
"At a high level, we're moving into an era of consumers in charge," he told Healthcare IT News in April.
ON THE RECORD
"By aligning with health systems who can guarantee both quality of care and competitive pricing, we can reduce administrative burden, and just as important, demonstrate true measurable value for the people who pay for care – employers and their employees," Tullman said in a prepared statement.

Spotify using AI to clone and translate podcasters’ voices
By
Trevor Mogg
September 25, 2023 6:40PM
Spotify has unveiled a remarkable new feature powered by artificial intelligence (AI) that translates a podcast into multiple languages using the same voices of those in the show.
It’s been made possible partly by OpenAI’s just-released voice generation technology that needs only a few seconds of listening to replicate a voice.
Recommended Videos
Spotify said the feature makes for “a more authentic listening experience that sounds more personal and natural than traditional dubbing,” adding: “A podcast episode originally recorded in English can now be available in other languages while keeping the speaker’s distinctive speech characteristics.”

Starting today, Spotify is making available voice-translated episodes from select creators, with shows translated from English to Spanish. In the coming days, French and German episodes will also be made available.
Available episodes in Spanish include:
Lex Fridman Podcast – Interview with Yuval Noah Harari
Armchair Expert – Kristen Bell, by the grace of god, returns
The Diary of a CEO with Steven Bartlett – Interview with Dr. Mindy Pelz
Alternatively, head to the Voice Translation hub in Spotify’s app to view all of the translated shows that are currently available, with new shows arriving in the weeks and months to come.
Spotify said that around 100 million people “regularly” listen to podcasts on its platform, and its new AI-powered voice translation offering could notch up millions of more listens for shows that suddenly find themselves in new, enormous markets.
One of the tests of Spotify’s new feature will be whether the translation element manages to accurately capture the nuances of the original dialogue.

Either way, it looks like another setback for voice actors , as the technology could easily be transferred to movies and TV shows, replicating the voices of an entire cast for international versions of the content.
Voice cloning technology has been around for some time and is getting better all the time due to advances in AI. Not surprisingly, it’s already being used for nefarious purposes, too, with a growing number of related scams coming to the attention of law enforcement agencies. It’s feared that the technology could also fuel a rise in more convincing misinformation as bad actors use it to create audio of politicians or leading figures appearing to say things that they didn’t.

How the USPS uses Nvidia GPUs and A.I. to track missing mail
The United States Postal Service, or USPS, is relying on artificial intelligence-powered by Nvidia's EGX systems to track more than 100 million pieces of mail a day that goes through its network. The world's busiest postal service system is relying on GPU-accelerated A.I. systems to help solve the challenges of locating lost or missing packages and mail. Essentially, the USPS turned to A.I. to help it locate a "needle in a haystack."
To solve that challenge, USPS engineers created an edge A.I. system of servers that can scan and locate mail. They created algorithms for the system that were trained on 13 Nvidia DGX systems located at USPS data centers. Nvidia's DGX A100 systems, for reference, pack in five petaflops of compute power and cost just under $200,000. It is based on the same Ampere architecture found on Nvidia's consumer GeForce RTX 3000 series GPUs.

Women get less value out of their benefits than men do: Deloitte study

Women face greater medical costs than men and, as such, are getting significantly less value out of their benefits, according to a new analysis from Deloitte.
Researchers at Deloitte dug into data from the Komodo Healthcare Map and found that employed women face as much as $15.4 billion more each year in out-of-pocket costs compared to men. Across all ages between 19 and 64, women's out-of-pocket expenses were higher on average, according to the report.

Among people with commercial insurance, the value of benefits to women is more than $1.3 billion less then men, the study found.
"We know about the wage gap and other products that are in market, like the 'pink tax,'" said Andy Davis, a principal at Deloitte's healthcare practice and one of the study's authors, in an interview with Fierce Healthcare. "It's another area where we continue to put more financial burden on women than we do men."
Related

Women also use more healthcare services, according to the report, but that doesn't necessary explain why the gap in expenses is so yawning. On average in 2021, women spent 20% more on out-of-pocket expenses compared to men and, excluding maternity costs, only slimmed the difference to 18%.
Women are more likely to need services that surpass the deductible, leading to higher spending out-of-pocket, according to the report. The analysts also found that women are more likely to reach their out-of-pocket maximum.
Some of the factors identified include early-age recommendations for annual checkups, more frequent gynecological care and higher cost for cancer screenings like mammograms.
For instance, it's common that women have coverage for one mammogram per year at no cost, Davis said. However, the follow-up diagnostics for mammograms can be costly, which will lead to higher expenses.
Routine cancer screenings for men, such as prostate exams and colorectal cancer tests, also tend to start later in life than tests for women do, Davis said.
So, what can insurers and employers be doing to address these issues? It starts with reexamining their benefits and thinking about ways they can address the highest-cost services that impact women most.
The researchers recommend that plans and plan sponsors conduct a comprehensive review on their benefits focusing on the effects on men, women and people of any gender. Covering this actuarial value gap, according to the report, shouldn't come at a massive cost to employers, either.
The analysts said it will cost less than $12 per employee, or less than $1 each month.
In addition, Davis said insurers and plan sponsors can be looking at the services that women use most often and finding ways to address spend in those areas to reduce the burden on them.
For example, women are more likely to seek out mental health care than men and tend to use more services on average. So addressing the coinsurance around behavioral health or offering coverage with no or low cost-sharing could make a huge difference, he said.
"These are small changes that can have a really large impact on the overall financial burden on women," he said.
