IBM trains its LLM to read, rewrite COBOL apps | CIO Dive
Summary
IBM trains watsonx.ai to convert COBOL code to Java to modernize mainframes and ease analysis, refactoring and transformation of legacy code. Deployment is planned by end of year. COBOL, a 1950s programming language, is estimated to run more than 800 billion lines daily globally despite modernization efforts. The AI solution, trained on COBOL data, compares syntax and semantics in the COBOL-to-Java translation to the original script for accuracy and uses licensed open-source software to mitigate risk.
