AMDIS / WittKieffer Physician Informatics Executive Survey RESULTS 2023
Summary
WittKieffer and AMDIS have maintained a collaborative relationship for over ten years, conducting four comprehensive surveys with Chief Medical Information/Informatics Officers (CMIOs) and physician informatics leaders in 2014, 2018, 2021, and most recently in April-May 2023. The latest survey gathered insights from over 215 physician informatics executives on the evolving role, scope, and compensation of CMIOs, as well as the current challenges they face in leadership and talent management.
The findings from the most recent survey indicate a significant shift in the role of physician informatics leaders from operational duties to more strategic ones, including the integration of digital transformation and artificial intelligence tools, with 79% of participants reporting an increase in their responsibilities. Financial constraints pose challenges for funding projects and expanding teams, and compensation has not seen substantial growth, though 72% of executives could negotiate better pay when moving to new organizations. Talent acquisition and retention remain problematic for over half of the respondents, with a strong ongoing commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. However, less than 40% of CMIOs and their equivalents have a succession plan in place, highlighting a gap in future leadership planning.
