A public health emergency has been declared in Los Angeles County due to ongoing wildfires, as announced by HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra on January 10. This declaration allows for increased flexibility in healthcare services for Medicare and Medicaid patients affected by the crisis, including waiving certain HIPAA privacy rules. The wildfires, which began on January 8, have resulted in at least 24 deaths and have destroyed thousands of buildings, including medical facilities. As of January 13, containment of the largest fires was reported between 14% and 89%, significantly disrupting healthcare services in the county.
