Blue Shield of California has disclosed a data breach affecting approximately 4.7 million members, resulting from a misconfiguration of Google Analytics that exposed protected health information to Google’s advertising platforms. The breach, which occurred between April 2021 and January 2024, involved the sharing of insurance plan details and demographic information, but not sensitive data like Social Security numbers or banking information. The organization identified the misconfiguration on February 11, 2025, and has since updated members to remain vigilant regarding their personal information.
