ID of five subtypes of Alzheimer's has huge implications for treatment

International neuroscientists identified five Alzheimer's disease subtypes, advocating disease-specific treatments. Examining cerebrospinal fluid enabled the identification of different proteins linked to Alzheimer's progression. The subtypes depicted unique genetic risk profiles and varied in cortical atrophy patterns and survival times. Subtype 1 involved excessive brain cell growth, subtype 2 indicated overactive immunity, subtype 3 related to RNA dysregulation, subtype 4 was linked to cerebrospinal fluid production dysfunction, and subtype 5 revealed blood-brain barrier malfunctions. Identifying the disease subtype could enable more effective, efficient treatments. Research published in Nature Aging.
