How University of Utah Health physicians fell in love with AI

University of Utah Health has improved patient interactions and streamlined clinical documentation by implementing an AI "co-pilot" for electronic health records (EHR). Over 150 clinicians are using the Microsoft Nuance DAX integrated with Epic Haiku, resulting in significant time savings and enhancing the accuracy of patient notes. However, some barriers to wider adoption include the $400 monthly cost per clinician and the need for clinicians to adapt to new documentation methods. Despite these challenges, the AI has reduced note-taking time, potentially increased patient throughput, and improved doctor-patient eye contact. Feedback from clinicians is continually improving the AI, and future developments could include versions for hospitalists and non-English-speaking patients.
