HHS Extends Public Health Emergency to Combat Ongoing Opioid Crisis

Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has renewed the public health emergency declaration for the opioid crisis in the U.S., originally established in 2017, extending it for an additional 90 days to facilitate federal efforts against the epidemic. The declaration allows for expanded authorities that support substance use disorder treatment and research initiatives. Despite a reported 25.5% decline in overdose deaths over the past year, Kennedy reaffirmed the administration's dedication to addressing the crisis as a national security emergency due to its ongoing severity.
