In his column, Robert Pearl warns that the U.S. healthcare system is facing three escalating threats that risk becoming irreversibly large because the industry moves too slowly to respond effectively; these include persistent workforce shortages, rapidly rising costs, and systemic inefficiencies that hinder adoption of innovation and strategic solutions. Pearl argues that without coordinated leadership and urgent action from healthcare executives, policymakers, and clinicians, problems like clinician burnout, financial strain on providers and patients, and structural barriers to change will overwhelm providers’ ability to adapt, ultimately threatening access, quality, and sustainability of care.
