Google Photos is launching SynthID digital watermarks for images edited using its Magic Editor's generative AI features to improve transparency around photo manipulations. This feature will help users identify images altered with the "reimagine" tool, embedding metadata in various media formats to indicate AI involvement. While similar watermarking systems have been adopted by other companies like Adobe, SynthID seeks to mitigate concerns over the deceptive potential of AI-generated images. However, the watermarks are not visually apparent and can only be detected through a specific tool, leaving some minor edits undetected.
