Cyberattacks Surge in Healthcare, Threatening Patient Safety and Care

A recent report by Proofpoint, Inc. and the Ponemon Institute shows a significant increase in patient care disruptions due to cyberattacks in healthcare, with a 77 percent rise compared to last year. The survey notes that 92 percent of health systems experienced at least one cyberattack, impacting patient outcomes negatively; specifically, 56 percent reported delays affecting care, and 28 percent indicated rising mortality rates. Notably, supply chain attacks were found to be particularly harmful. Despite some increase in IT budgets, challenges in cybersecurity effectiveness persist, according to Larry Ponemon, chairman of the Ponemon Institute.
