With more than 30 years of experience in the technology and information services industry, Mr. McCallister was named Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer (CIO) at UPMC in 2014. A champion for transforming clinical care and customer service through technology and innovation, he leads a team of more than 2,000 IT professionals. He is responsible for the technology strategy and infrastructure that supports UPMC’s world-class clinical care, insurance services, international operations and research.
Mr. McCallister has supported UPMC during an intense period of growth from 20 hospitals to over 40 hospitals. Through Mr. McCallister’s leadership, UPMC has invested more than $2 billion in technologies over the past six years to support the growing number of services, users, and connected devices. Mr. McCallister is also the founder and executive sponsor of UPMC’s Women in IT initiative, which aims to inspire, empower, and promote female technology career paths at UPMC and in the community.
Mr. McCallister previously served for 15 years as a director and then vice president and CIO of UPMC’s rapidly growing Insurance Services Division. He helped to build the systems that support the Health Plan’s national reputation for outstanding customer service and led the team that developed the original population health platform used by Evolent Health, a successful joint venture between UPMC Health Plan and the Advisory Board. Mr. McCallister also played a key role in support of the Health Plan’s growth from a ‘start-up’ to now over 3.5 million members.
Mr. McCallister earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Francis University. Before joining UPMC, he served as an executive at Highmark and Electronic Data Systems (EDS) in Plano, Texas. He currently serves on the boards of the Pittsburgh Technology Council, the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank, the Involta Healthcare Advisory Board, and the Allscripts Strategic Client Advisory Council.
