Nirav Shah, MD is the Medical Director of Quality Innovation and Clinical Practice Analytics at NorthShore University HealthSystem. Nirav is a leader in analytics, informatics, digital health, quality and innovation working on numerous cutting edge projects to transform healthcare. His north star is leveraging technology to improve outcomes, reduce cost, while improving patient and provider experience. He communicates with clinicians, quality leaders, health information technology analysts, data scientists and outcomes researchers on a daily basis and serves as a translator that can leverage a broad range of skillsets to bring to bear on complex problems. Some of his areas of prior and current work include building custom predictive analytics, implementing natural language processing into his organization's clinical environment, translating predictive analytics into prescriptions for care providers in a way that is intuitive, seamless and personalized (CAPE) all in the electronic health record (Epic), creating a continuous remote monitoring program with a robust research program and rigor in data collection, developing custom digital journeys for diabetes and hypertension patients, deploying numerous tactics to reduce clinician inbasket burden, deep automation into Epic of scoring tools and clinical pathways (the VTE tool Caprini and custom Infectious disease tools), performing pragmatic randomized controlled trials of quality improvement initiatives in Epic, building and implementing a framework to standardize workflows using process improvement and change management methodologies and running an innovation studio for his organization's quality team. Nirav leads his organization's advanced analytics committee, clinical decision support committee and founded their informatics and analytics journal clubs. He serves on the physician committee at HIMSS and regularly presents at national conferences on topics as broad as continuous remote monitoring and prescriptive analytics. He has participated in numerous external (AHRQ and NIH) and internal grants with collaborators across the US. Nirav has published over 30 manuscripts across infectious diseases, informatics, analytics, and digital health from journals as broad as New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Journal of Applied Clinical Informatics, Clinical Infectious Diseases and Critical Care Medicine. He leads a research team of roughly 10 outstanding data scientists, clinical associates, clinical research coordinators and students and mentors high school, college, masters and phd students, residents, fellows and attendings. Nirav embraces ambiguity, seizes opportunity, moves quickly and thinks out of the box. He works to transform how we think about delivering care and loves every minute.
