Sadly, Cybersecurity didn't make the top 5, 10 or even 11. What did make the list?
Today in health, it we're just going to have a talk.
Speaker:My name is bill Russell.
Speaker:I'm a former CIO for a 16 hospital system.
Speaker:And creator this week in health, it a channel dedicated to keeping
Speaker:health it staff current and engaged.
Speaker:No sponsor message for today.
Speaker:Just want to make you aware that I'm going to be traveling for the next three weeks.
Speaker:I'm going to be going.
Speaker:To the health conference or H L T H.
Speaker:However you want to say it, I will continue to call it the health conference.
Speaker:, I, then it go to a board meeting.
Speaker:I followed up with chime.
Speaker:I then go to an event that I'm helping to moderate for one of
Speaker:my sponsors that is offsite.
Speaker:So I'm going to be really moving around for the next three weeks.
Speaker:Should be interesting.
Speaker:I'll have a lot to talk about.
Speaker:I just want to make you aware of that because next week.
Speaker:Since I'm going to be at the health conference.
Speaker:I don't know how many of these I'm going to be able to put out.
Speaker:I will be doing some interviews while I'm there and if I can, I will produce them.
Speaker:I will put them out on the today's show, but don't be surprised if
Speaker:I miss one or two days next week.
Speaker:Given the travel schedule.
Speaker:Other things I wanted to talk about had an interesting conversation this week.
Speaker:We did a webinar just this past week.
Speaker:And we decided to put that webinar up on our website, but we only wanted that
Speaker:available to people who registered.
Speaker:And it created an interesting conversation between me and my team.
Speaker:And.
Speaker:It took me back to when I was a CIO, having the same
Speaker:conversations with physicians.
Speaker:And it was the conversation of how much security is too
Speaker:much and how much usability is the right amount of usability.
Speaker:So we decided to go with a form of two factor authentication.
Speaker:You essentially put your user ID and password in.
Speaker:It sends you an email and you get a code.
Speaker:You then put your code in and you get to see the webinar.
Speaker:That's if you've registered.
Speaker:And the workflow works.
Speaker:It works pretty well, but the team came back to me and said, Hey, there's
Speaker:too much friction in this process.
Speaker:And people aren't going to go through that level of security to view the webinar.
Speaker:And I was reminded of the many times I sat in front of physicians and
Speaker:they said, you got to make it easier.
Speaker:You've got to make it easier.
Speaker:And that's the age old.
Speaker:Balance.
Speaker:I'm not really talking about this to give you an answer on what you should do.
Speaker:We decided to go on the security route.
Speaker:Because I'm working in healthcare and the state of things right
Speaker:now around cybersecurity.
Speaker:Is really a heightened state of security.
Speaker:So I decided to head in that direction and not head in the direction of making it.
Speaker:More easy.
Speaker:I don't know.
Speaker:I might lose viewers of that webinar, which would be a shame.
Speaker:Far and away, one of the best webinars I've ever been a part of or seen.
Speaker:Quite frankly, I thought it was fantastic.
Speaker:The team was very vulnerable, shared a lot of great stuff, and there's a lot of
Speaker:good things out there for health systems.
Speaker:If you want to see it, it's on our homepage.
Speaker:Click on the webinar.
Speaker:Go ahead and register and then go through the login process.
Speaker:You tell me if there's too much friction.
Speaker:In the process.
Speaker:Alright, also wanted to touch on this.
Speaker:Hit a LinkedIn today.
Speaker:And Scott Becker had a really cool actually, I guess two days old.
Speaker:It's been a while, since I've been out there and he has 11 issues that are
Speaker:top of mind for healthcare leaders, and he's preparing for a talk with
Speaker:healthcare graduate students, and he worked up this list and here you go.
Speaker:Number one, healthcare workforce shortages at most.
Speaker:All levels plus morale and traveling staff and more.
Speaker:Is a, the number one issue, I would say the number one issue is labor.
Speaker:You have the.
Speaker:Strike that's going on at Kaiser or getting ready to go on at
Speaker:Kaiser in California and Oregon.
Speaker:I think, which is indicative of the stress that healthcare workers have
Speaker:been under for a very long time.
Speaker:And they are looking for recognition of that.
Speaker:They're looking for the staff shortages to be addressed.
Speaker:There's just a lot of things around, around staff and labor.
Speaker:I think that are all wrapped up in that number one issue.
Speaker:Number two, trying to find a new business normal for many perspectives.
Speaker:In the face of constant change and disruption, I think that's true.
Speaker:I think people are trying to get their footing again and
Speaker:figure out where we're at.
Speaker:I, it felt like we were getting there, but maybe that is not the case since
Speaker:he's getting indications, that is still the case from healthcare leaders.
Speaker:Number three, moving away from such heavy reliance on the top four or five
Speaker:revenue generating specialties and more towards value based care and models.
Speaker:I think people talk about value based care.
Speaker:But they're not pursuing it as quickly as they should because they can't
Speaker:figure out the financials around it.
Speaker:And so I think they are pursuing not value-based care per se.
Speaker:I think they're pursuing partnerships where they can be.
Speaker:Payers and providers where they can start to get skin in the game on both sides.
Speaker:And that is the model that they're pursuing.
Speaker:If that be the definition of value-based care, then so be it.
Speaker:Number four COVID-19 and taking care of COVID-19 patients and staff
Speaker:obviously is up there in vaccinations and staff and community issues.
Speaker:Rounds out the top five, and then he has a bunch of other things.
Speaker:I think once you get past the top five, you're talking about things
Speaker:that are on the list that get talked about, but maybe aren't.
Speaker:Getting any traction or getting done?
Speaker:The thing from a health it perspective, I found interesting is that again,
Speaker:these are issues top of mind for healthcare leaders in cybersecurity.
Speaker:Isn't in the top five.
Speaker:I find that hard to believe.
Speaker:That given what happened at scripts given what's happening across the
Speaker:landscape, that cybersecurity isn't in the top five, given that at the JP
Speaker:Morgan conference, a whole bunch of the CEOs got up and said, cybersecurity
Speaker:is one of their top priorities.
Speaker:So clearly somehow between then and now.
Speaker:Or at least the people that Scott's talking to.
Speaker:That list.
Speaker:It has gotten way down the list on that.
Speaker:In fact, the only thing from a technology perspective, number six, digital
Speaker:adoption and experience are trying to make big leaps forward in digital and
Speaker:technology and patient experience.
Speaker:So health systems are trying to make that leap.
Speaker:. I think also if I were looking at a technology list, You would
Speaker:have to put something on there with regard to a hospital at
Speaker:home, a remote patient monitoring.
Speaker:You'd have to put something on there with regard to analytics, advanced
Speaker:analytics things like clinical decision support, integrating AI,
Speaker:those kinds of stuff I would think would have to be on that list as well.
Speaker:Again, as I told you, this was going to be a hodgepodge.
Speaker:Why don't you let you know, I would be traveling and these shows are
Speaker:going to be a little less consistent.
Speaker:If you will, you might get more of these talks, like what I'm hearing at
Speaker:the health conference and what I heard.
Speaker:From various speakers.
Speaker:I might grab some people do short interviews and post those up there.
Speaker:I'm not sure really what I'm going to do next week.
Speaker:While I am traveling, but wanted Encourage you to check back because
Speaker:I don't know what I would be doing.
Speaker:And I dunno, you might like it more.
Speaker:You might tell me, Hey, head more in this direction.
Speaker:We'll see.
Speaker:That's the nature of the show.
Speaker:We've been trying things out.
Speaker:On our various channels and our different formats for awhile now,
Speaker:and going into next year, we're going to have five different shows,
Speaker:five different shows based on feedback that we've gotten from you.
Speaker:And so keep it coming bill@thisweekinhealthit.com
Speaker:that's all for today.
Speaker:If you know someone that might benefit from our channel,
Speaker:please forward them a note.
Speaker:They can subscribe on our website this week, health.com or wherever you listen
Speaker:to podcasts, apple, Google, overcast, Spotify, Stitcher, you get the picture.
Speaker:We are everywhere.
