On the tech side of the house, big news this week in AI as Chinese company DeepSeek has released a new reasoning model called DeepSeek R1 that can reason its way through complicated problems, at least as well as OpenAI's reasoning model called O1.
AI reasoning models are designed to excel at math and logic and pattern finding and decision making. But what makes DeepSeek's R1 model even more interesting is that it's not a super secret project. It was just released for everyone to see. And it didn't train on yet to be released chips. DeepSeek trained on currently available chips, apparently creating this parity with OpenAI using less power.
All of this Coming from what appears to be some pretty clever decisions in the name of efficiency, kind of demonstrating the do more with less when it comes to developing and training AI reasoning. We'll see what happens next. Making announcements is the easy part. But this announcement seems to have OpenAI and Meta and other industry leaders a little bit concerned about Chinese competition.
