Health Benefits Administrator Health Equity reported earlier this month to the Security and Exchange Commission that they had a breach and now we know it was tied to compromised vendor credentials and the 4.
3 million people with health savings accounts or flexible savings accounts had data compromised. Health equity joins a long list of supply chain partners who've had data compromises this year. The U. S. has indicted a North Korean government backed hacker for allegedly taking part in a U. S. healthcare ransomware ring.
The attacks included hospitals in Florida, in Kansas and other healthcare organizations in Arkansas, Connecticut, and Colorado. It's well known that the North Korean government, whose economy is largely isolated from the West, depends on stealing money from Bitcoin wallets and banks and conducting ransomware and other such thuggery.
Uh, they've walked away with billions of dollars, actually, in the past several years. Much of that money's gone to funding their missile program and expanding their criminal cyber operations. Apple released a bunch of security updates this week for Safari and iOS and MacOS and watchOS and all the OS's.
Bad guys can apparently take control of these devices if they're left unpatched. So patch, patch, patch. I know it's a pain. You got to reboot. You got to do all the things, but it's way better than the alternative. On Tuesday, I talked about the challenges with technology consolidation. And while there's great potential for cost savings and economies of scale, there's clearly risk.
And we've seen it several times this year already with change healthcare and CrowdStrike. But even this week, there were protracted outages at both Microsoft Azure. And Amazon Web Services.
