June 6, 2024

A ransomware cyberattack has disrupted the operations at two major London hospital trusts, Guy's and St Thomas' and King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, as well as GP services in South London. The attack has forced the cancellation of all non-emergency operations and blood tests, impacting tens of thousands of patients. Pathology provider Synnovis, which serves multiple hospitals in the area, confirmed the incident, leading to significant delays and operational challenges. The National Cyber Security Centre and NHS England have declared a level three incident and are working to resolve the issue, which may take weeks or months. Rural hospitals are particularly vulnerable to ransomware, report finds

June 6, 2024

A recent report from CSC 2.0 highlights the escalating threat of ransomware attacks on U.S. healthcare systems, with rural hospitals being particularly vulnerable due to limited resources and tighter budgets. The report emphasizes the need for increased federal funding to enhance cybersecurity measures across the industry. Recent ransomware incidents, such as attacks on Ascension and Change Healthcare, have severely disrupted patient care and hospital operations, underscoring the potential for catastrophic outcomes. Recommendations include developing long-term cybersecurity goals, enhancing training, and supporting underfunded facilities with outsourced IT services and contingency planning. The report also addresses the reliance on outdated systems in the healthcare sector, contributing to its vulnerability. Despite national efforts to combat ransomware, attacks are on the rise, with significant impacts on patient care, including increased death rates and longer hospital stays.
