Virtual Nursing Model Cuts Turnover by 50% and Boosts Patient Care

November 5, 2024

Providence's Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas, has effectively implemented the Co-Caring virtual nursing model, initially launched as a pilot in 2021 to address rising patient volumes and nursing burnout. Over three years, the model has improved job satisfaction among nurses and halved turnover rates. By allowing virtual nurses to assist in administrative tasks, the program has supported medical-surgical units and is set to expand to oncology, emergency, and postpartum departments. So far, ten out of Providence's 51 hospitals have adopted the model, with more expected by early 2025. Additionally, the initiative has led to better patient outcomes, including reduced hospital stays.

Hospitals Cut Services Amid Financial Strain and Staffing Shortages

November 5, 2024

Numerous healthcare organizations are closing medical departments or discontinuing services, driven by financial pressures, staffing shortages, and changing patient needs. Since July 1, 25 hospitals, such as Evanston Regional Hospital and Mad River Community Hospital, have ceased labor and delivery services due to declining patient demand. Emanate Health is also reducing its offerings, citing significant financial challenges and layoffs. This trend is evident across various healthcare services, including behavioral health and pediatrics, indicating a broader reassessment of hospital service provision to prioritize more essential areas.

Teen Hackers Emerge as Major Cyber Threats to Corporations

November 5, 2024

A new group of financially motivated hackers known as "advanced persistent teenagers" is emerging as a significant cybersecurity threat, with known entities like Lapsus$ and Scattered Spider leading the charge. These young cybercriminals have employed sophisticated social engineering tactics to infiltrate major organizations, including hotels and tech companies, by impersonating help desk staff and using credible email lures to extract sensitive information. Cybersecurity experts, including Darren Gruber from MongoDB and Heather Gantt-Evans from Marqeta, emphasize the need for organizations to recognize and understand the tactics of these youth-driven cyber threats, which exploit vulnerabilities in human behavior rather than relying solely on advanced technology.
