Summary
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has launched a new initiative to prioritize human-based research technologies and decrease dependency on animal models in scientific studies. This initiative, which aligns with the FDA’s goals of reducing animal testing, aims to utilize innovative non-animal models like organoids and tissue chips to better understand human diseases and enhance healthcare outcomes. Acknowledging the limitations of animal research, particularly in relation to diseases such as Alzheimer’s and cancer, the NIH will create the Office of Research Innovation, Validation, and Application (ORIVA) to oversee the development and validation of these non-animal approaches, along with expanding funding and training opportunities for researchers.
