Eric Poon, MD is the Chief Health Information Officer at Duke University Health System.

Eric Poon practices primary care internal medicine at the Durham Medical Center as part of Duke Primary Care. In his capacity as CHIO, he takes on the responsibility of visioning and strategic planning for clinical and analytic information systems that have a significant impact on patient care, research, and education. Eric collaborates with Duke Medicine leadership to ensure that technology solutions align effectively with the organization's overall objectives. He oversees the continuous development and optimization of the Maestro Care (Epic) electronic health record and other clinical IT systems. Working alongside physicians, patients, and operational leaders, Eric leverages innovative IT to support the mission of Duke.

Furthermore, Eric holds a keen interest in IT innovation and actively collaborates with investigators across Duke to explore new and innovative ways of delivering high-quality care efficiently to patients.

In terms of research, Eric's interests revolve around utilizing health information technology to enhance the quality of care and patient safety in both ambulatory and hospital settings. His work in the ambulatory setting focuses on providing efficient decision support to clinicians to prevent errors in diagnostic test ordering and result reviews. Additionally, he explores the use of secure online patient portals to improve communication between clinicians and patients regarding health maintenance and follow-up of abnormal test results.

In the inpatient setting, Eric has conducted numerous studies to understand the barriers and facilitators of widespread diffusion of computerized physician order entry. He has also led multiple studies evaluating the safety, financial, and socio-technical impact of barcode technology in hospital pharmacy and nursing units.
