Do the new terms make it better for healthcare?

Transcript

Today in health it, we're gonna take a look at the new chat, G p T four terms. And the reason I keep going down this path is because I'm here being used all over healthcare and. These terms matter and the privacy and security of your patient data matters. So that's why I'm doing it. My name is Bill Russell.

I'm a former CIO for a 16 hospital system and creator of this week Health, A set of channels dedicated to keeping health IT staff current and engaged. We wanna thank our show sponsors who are investing in developing the next generation of health leaders. Sure. Test and Artis. I check them out at this week.

health.com/today. As you know, we've been supporting Alex's Lemonade stand in their. , fight against childhood cancer and in their pursuit of cures for childhood cancer. And we are excited to announce that we raised over $22,000 between the Vibe and hymns events, and we couldn't have done that without the great sponsors that, , have been a part of that Order.

Shore Test, Artis and Rubric, they contributed significantly. , to this program, and we are really thankful for them doing that. , great sponsors, great partners, and, , I appreciate their, , commitment to, , to healthcare and to health and the health and wellbeing of kids who are battling with cancer.

So we, , thank them. There was a whole bunch of you that went out to the website, clicked on the link, and gave directly. I, I can't thank you all individually. You know the $50 gift, the a hundred dollars gift? , even one of you gave a thousand dollars. I, it just overwhelms me, , that, , that we get to be a part of this great work.

And so I appreciate it and, , wanna thank you. If you want to continue to be a part of it, , we will do another drive next month. But, , for this month, go ahead and hit our. Website, top banner. See the logo for Alex's Lemonade Stand. Click on that and give. Today we believe in the generosity of our community, and we thank you in advance.

All right. You know, I forgot what, what are the other reasons I do this? And I'm talking a lot about this, about chat. G P T is, it's the conversation right now, right? And so as you are tooling around, I remember when I was a cio, I would tool around and get into conversations with people, and invariably they would ask me, About whatever the trending thing was.

It could have been cybersecurity, ransomware, , it could have been, , cloud computing, and why can't we share images the same way I do it at home, and that kind of stuff. And I needed to have answers for those things to be the trusted source. Now, I didn't always have answers. Sometimes I had to go back to my team.

Sometimes I had to do some research. , because you can't be an expert on everything that's going on. However, on the big things, on the things that people expect you to be weighing in on, , you should be current. And that's what I'm trying to do here, is to make sure that you maintain, , a certain level of being current on this topic.

Generative AI chat, G p t four. , these are big topics, Bard, Google, Bard, and others that are being put out there. These large language models are the conversation right now. And what they're doing is, , very important. It's being used in your health system. I don't even know which health system I'm talking to right now.

I can guarantee you it's being used. There's some nurse sitting there right now putting patient data in there and getting a summary or getting something that makes their life easier, makes their job easier, and so, We have to get in front of this. We have to know what's going on. I talked about governance yesterday.

I talked about secure browsers to keep the information from going up there that you don't want to go up there. And, , I talked, , gosh, what else did I talk about yesterday? Talked about the need for, , oversight. Just, , these models need to be trained. They are in their infancy. They're really sophisticated.

They're giving us back answers that are just amazing. But at the end of the day, consider it like a two year old. And you wouldn't give it the keys to your car and you shouldn't give it to the keys to your car. And some of us are giving it the keys to our car, right? So we have to get in front of this a little bit because that's what we're paid to do.

All right, chat. G P T changed their terms and this, this change is very relevant to us. I don't know if it's perfect, but it's very relevant to us. So this is straight from the Open AI website. We've introduced the ability to turn off chat history. In chat G P T conversations that are started when chat history is disabled, won't be used to train and improve our models and won't appear in our history.

Sidebar, these controls which are rolling out to all users starting today can be found in chat GT's settings and can be changed at any time. We hope this provides an easier way to manage your data than our existing opt-out process. When chat history is disabled, we will retain new conversations for 30 days and review them only when needed to monitor for abuse before permanently deleting.

So the reason this is important is none of you, zero of you have an , a BAA with open ai. You might have a BAA with. Microsoft, and it might cover this and you're gonna have to check on that to see if it covers this, but it, you likely don't have a BAA with OpenAI. I don't. I'm not familiar with anyone who does.

Okay. So it becomes important because, If we put our information out there and somehow it leaks into the world, somehow it trains a model and somehow that model spits that information back out. , and an in inappropriate time as a two-year-old is prone to do, you could face, , legal liability amongst other things.

All right, so turning the chat history off is one step in that direction of saying, Hey, don't learn from our data just yet. I have a feeling we're gonna see some narrow models emerge from this, where we can train it on our specific healthcare systems data. I think that's where this is gonna go, but we're not there yet.

And so they're taking your data, they're gonna keep it around for 30 days just to make sure there's no abuse or anything to that effect. They're just monitoring the effectiveness of the tool, and then they're gonna delete that information. Okay. That's an important distinction. I not perfect, but it's a, it's a, it's a step in the right direction for.

Organizations like healthcare. All right, we'll go on to the second thing they announced. We are also working on a new chat G P T Business subscription for professionals who need more control over their data, as well as enterprises seeking to manage their end users. Chat, G P T Business will follow our API's data usage policies, which means that end users.

Data won't be used to train our models By default, we plan to make chat G B T business available in the coming months. All right, so not available today. Announced important distinction. You're gonna have granular controls over the data that goes into chat. G B T I think it's, it's a little vague at this point.

And the DA data that goes in, is it retained? Is it used to train their model? Okay. Another option for you. And then finally, this is the last thing they. They announced today. Finally, a new export option in settings makes it much easier to export your chat G P T data and understand what information Chat.

Chat G p t stores. You'll receive a file with your conversations and all other relevant data in email, and this is the start of logging. Logging is important in healthcare. Logging gives us a trace of what's working, what's not working. So very important and , definitely something we're gonna want to keep an eye on.

So, that's it, that's what's going on. I want you to be current on this. I want you to be able to answer questions, and I want you to, , be considering all the ramifications around a model like this. This feels like the advent of the EHR to me. It's like there, this is like the start of many tools just like this and the start of use of AI across your health system.

Somebody said to me today, , do you want the healthcare system to become an IT company? And I, I, my first thought was, it already is our technology company. I said, my first thought was, it already is, but if it wasn't already, my answer is yes. Because we have problems to solve that we can only solve by.

Utilizing technology as our servants, utilizing technology to serve the people that we have within our health systems, our staff, and make them more effective, make them better clinicians, make them better nurses, because it brings the information they need. At their fingertips, it does not, , overwhelm them with cognitive load and it makes them more effective in the job they were hired to do.

So yes, I think healthcare organizations are technology companies. That's all for today. If you know someone that might benefit from our channel, please forward them a note. They can subscribe on our website this week, health.com or wherever you listen to podcasts. Apple, Google Overcast, Spotify, Stitcher.

You get the picture. We are everywhere and we appreciate it when you do that. We want to thank our channel sponsors who are investing in our mission to develop the next generation of health leaders. Sure. Test and 📍 our decide. Check them out at this week, health.com/today. Thanks for listening. That's all for now.
