Today we are talking about ISVs and Partners bringing all of the ecosystem together. What do partners bring to the healthcare ecosystem? What tools and knowledge can they impart on healthcare CIOs? How do they touch the areas that the healthcare system doesn’t see? How does VMware approach enabling the modernization of this stack? One of the key components of growth is to start engaging other external resources to validate the impact of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in your business to provide real world experience.

Thanks for joining us. My name is bill Russell. I'm a former CIO for a 16 hospital system and creator of this week health, a set of channels dedicated to keeping health it staff current. And engaged, welcome to our digital infrastructure to support the evolving care delivery model briefing campaign. This is being done in partnership with VMware, and I'm excited to get to our topic today. VMware ecosystem, ISVs and partners to bring all of this stuff that we've been talking about for the first four sessions together, we're joined by Cameron Luellen, director, healthcare ISVs, and Elias partners at. This podcast series is gonna culminate with an excellent webinar. I'd love to have you sign up and be a part of the discussion. We're gonna have experts talking about enterprise cloud, cloud, native workforce, and the ecosystem that brings that all together. You can get more information on our website this week health.com top right hand corners where our webinars are Thursday, October 13th from one to 2:00 PM Eastern time. you can also get more information in the description box below. So we wanna thank VMware once again for this great series and for helping us to deliver on our mission, which is to develop the next generation of health leaders now 📍 on our show.

All right. We are in our fifth session with Cameron Luwellen, Director healthcare ISVs and Alliance partners at VMware. Cameron. Welcome back to the show. Thank you, bill. It's been fun. It has been fun. Can you believe this is our fifth one? but we still have, the webinar. So I'm looking forward to the webinar should be fun.

Yeah. Let's hope the finale is better than game and Thrones.

Yeah, we're Seinfeld. I mean, there's, there's a lot of failed finales over the years, alright, so, Hey, this one, we're gonna talk about ISVs and partners to bring this all together.

That's at your director of healthcare, ISVs and Alliance partners at VMware. What do those partners bring to the healthcare ecosystem? What do they bring to me as the healthcare CIO?

Yeah. For partners and ISVs, one of the things that they do that is so important to VMware is they touch the areas that the healthcare system that we don't see. Right. I, I tell my son all the time that the only tool in your toolbox is a hammer. Everything looks like a nail. And so while I wanna believe that VMware solves all the problems within your healthcare ecosystem, I know that there are parts of your human resources of your, your people and processes that we're just not familiar with.

So they act as an accelerator. And a lot of times they just take care of things that we don't normally see once they show them to us, we try to figure out how we can enable it. But ultimately they are really one of the driving engines on what's made VMware successful over the years.

We talked to a couple of those at the at HNS. I think it was, we were in your booth and we interviewed a couple of those. And some of 'em were around AI and machine learning. And we were talking to people who have partnered with Invidia. And the, the cool thing about that is that you guys. Have a way of ver the same way you virtualized our servers and all that other stuff back in the day, you're now virtualizing that whole infrastructure, that Invidia architecture for AI and machine learning, which is so important, especially for the academic medical centers, as they delve into research and start really crunching these, these huge algorithms.

But we saw some of those partners already starting to utilize this stuff. And I remember one of 'em was around imaging and the bringing AI and ML to imaging has been something we've been talking about for years, but their ability around mammography to identify things was really, really impressive.

And I guess that speaks to what you were saying. I mean, these ISVs are identifying all these places to serve healthcare and then bringing bring, bringing the VMware tools to bear.

so for me, anecdotally, right we just got back my daughter's information for ancestry.com and what was really profound is the way that they continue to be able to crunch the data, to give us new insights to who we are. Right. But these things are happening now at such a scale that what ISVs are doing around IML is impossible to really quantify. It feels like the conversations around IML are like the cloud conversations of 2020. The dreams are fun, but having a practical way to really enable that. Within your infrastructure is most important.

So the way that we really look at that in terms of partnerships with ISVs like Nvidia and Google, is we wanna be able to support the most leading edge use cases, but the ones that seem to offer the most opportunity where modernization is concerned as well. Right? Because there are some aspects of your ecosystem that don't need AI ML.

Right. I think, I think that's important to also say, so being able to help organizations when they're trying to achieve those outcomes is ultimately one of the best and sort of strongest parts of having partners. Like the ones I mentioned

it's interesting. I mean, you, you mentioned that it's like the cloud conversation. When I came into healthcare and started talking about the cloud, they, they sort of looked at me and they were like, Hey, slow down there, buck Rogers, you're going too fast. I know buck Rogers is probably missed on a lot of people, but space, age, character back in the sixties and seventies. And they were like, Hey, just slow down.

We're not ready for the future just yet. But the reality is. A lot of other industries had already done the cloud. So doing it in healthcare just made sense. And they had a lot of practical application and people thought, Hey, that's just the latest buzzword and people who talked about it, didn't understand how healthcare worked.

I think that mantle has absolutely been passed to AI and ML. There's people who say, oh, that's a buzzword. And then there's people who say, well that won't be applied to healthcare, but we're seeing it be applied in so many different areas. how does VMware approach enabling the modernization of this stack?

First of all, I, I love, the reference by the way, right? I'm a big star Trek fan myself, but considering the speed of change, how can any healthcare organization reasonably expect to be able to evaluate test and execute, giving all the variety of the options? Right. And when you're talking about something that's in, in that important, we know that there's ingrained cost, right?

Whether or not that's financial the experience, the duration of time, and then ultimately the risk, right? So healthcare organizations have this need to really get that right. So what we typically do is we wanna look at. Reducing the opportunity for sending any sort of shadow it. I, I need to make sure that people understand that because when we ever start talking about leading edge and leading edge tools, a lot of times people will start to look for things that are outside of the enterprise.

But we do that by sensing, mainstreaming the conversation as making AI ML, one of the key components of growth and believe it or not that enabling capacity makes it so that we start engaging other external resources to validate the impact of AI ML on your business to provide real world experience for other organizations that have done it.

And that helps us also to sort of avoid any sort of unnecessary roadblocks. And then after that too, sort of as a, sort of a last silo, we don't wanna identify what the largest potential upside for healthcare is based on the revenue generation and the specialization of care. Right now, that's where we are seeing a lot of the most important use cases. And it really goes back to what kind of health system you are

I already talked about academic medical centers and clearly they'll utilize this kind of technology. I would think the, the main benefit here is it's an environment that you're already managing, right?

So we're utilizing the same tools. We're virtualizing a different set of capabilities, but we're utilizing the same set of tools. If they're a smaller health system, if they're maybe not an academic medical center, they might be saying AI and ML standing this stuff up. Why would I do that? That seems like it's, it's beyond where we're going to go.

And I'd love to discuss that a little bit with you. So let's take the I mean, small these days is not that small, but let's take the billion to $2 billion health system. And you're saying, Hey, virtualize, that AI ML stack, why would they do that?

Yeah, well, so I wanna be very clear. It's a cost consideration versus the value, right? So if you are in a, in a, place in a space where right now your run rate business is not where you need to look at AIML then fine. But typically even those organizations are operating under single digit margins, right? So if you are looking at it, then the question is you think there's a future without it.

So after you've answered that question, we can start to talk about partnerships with different ISVs, where maybe we're virtualizing the stack first in some sort of test environment or something that's outside of your four walls. Before we start to put it in a production. And then again, leveraging all of the experience that we've had with all of the other different organizations that we work with.

We're gonna deliver AI ML solutions that are suited for you. So instead of sort of boiling the ocean, we're taking a drop by drop.

it's interesting. So you're working with a bunch of ISVs and Alliance partners in this area giving people an idea of what the ecosystem looks like, that they I love the fact that you are working with them, right?

So you're getting in front of this curve to say, Hey, look, develop on top of this platform. You're gonna go into healthcare. We're already in, I mean, I don't know what your market share is, but I would assume it's in the upper 90% of every healthcare organization in the country. So you're working with them.

You're already working with these players. what does that look like? Give us an idea of what that, the scale of that ecosystem looks.

like

Sure. So you, you alluded to why people wanna work with us, which is really sort of the install base of vSphere, the consistency, the reliability of that. And so that means that we work with all of the hyperscalers, right? We've got cloud offerings with Amazon, with Google, with Microsoft. I think we've got one development right now with Oracle. So this space where some of this information is going to live, we are looking at how we build bridges into those clouds.

And again, serving it up through a VMware experience that you're used to. But past that, we look at the ISVs, like the EMRs, right? The epic the green Greenway health Athena health, new places, and new E EHRs that are popping up all around the globe. And then we look at technology partners like Intel Invidia at the core of really what's driving.

The actual processing. And then we get outside of that and we start actually talking about medical devices. People are doing frontier things that are helping us to achieve better outcomes, whether or not it's Fitbit or OEM manufacturers like Dell and apple and all of these things together.

Right. are woven into the VMware platform to ultimately deliver what we would call sort of modernized healthcare. Right. That's what we're talking about in this overall.

series

Yep. Absolutely. All right. So let's give people a little idea of what we're gonna be doing on the on the webinar itself. What what kind of topics do you think we're gonna delve into? Why should people be excited about coming on the webinar?

Well we, we ultimately wanna leave with CIOs and CTOs and CNOs feeling like you've got a partner. Who was trying to help you answer some of the critical challenges that you're facing. Right. We know, and I don't know, they'll know that I mentioned it bill.

So I'm gonna mention the pandemic to make sure we're consistent, right. What we don't want is to have anything like that, come again, that exposes an underbelly for some of our most critical infrastructure. And, and that's what our frontline workers are. So whether or not you're coming to figure out how you can better enable your frontline workers.

If you're coming to figure out how you can manage your cloud operations. If you've got a concern about what the future of your healthcare organization is like, ultimately with AI and me, if you're looking really to, to, to get consistency in the way that you look at your technology stack, what we want to leave you with is the ability to empower patients, care teams, extend the reach of care with our modern it systems. And then know that you've got partnerships with us. That really is not about us. It's about you. And then the other partner ISVs that we work with.

So there you have it. We're gonna get very pragmatic in the webinar talking specific solutions in what people are doing. So looking forward to that Cameron, this has been this has been wonderful.

One more. We'll get together on the webinar, but I really wanna thank you for your time. This has been a fantastic discussion. Really appreciate it.

Thank you, buck Rogers. 📍
